Charles Shephard
Buck Private Charles F. Shepard entered the Army in June 1918, when he attended Camp Lewis, WA. In August, he sailed to France and joined the 80th division in October. Shepherd was sent to the front lines at Meuse Argonne, France on November 1. On the fifth day after his transfer, Shepherd, along with three other men were carrying a wounded soldier on a stretcher when they heard a machine gun. Charles soon realised that a bullet had lodged itself in his arm. After staying at the hospital in the casualty camp, he returned to the states where he was discharged and took a civilian train to Wyoming. He traveled back to Montana where that summer he worked on a farm, but because there was no rain there was no crop. He only earned $37.50 that summer so when he was offered to teach he took it. He was then married on December 29,1919 and his wife took over the post office. A year before his death the family moved to Baker and Charles passed away in August 1971, at age 77.
